Fleet safety and collisions between cyclists and pedestrians were the focus of two presentations delivered to members of the London Road Safety Council at a recent quarterly meeting.
Jason Ross (second left in pic) from Transport for London (TfL) and Liz Brooker (third left in pic), Lewisham Council’s road safety manager, spoke at the meeting which took place at the Guildhall in the City of London on 13 April.
In his presentation, ‘Work Related Road Risk (WRRR)’, Jason Ross outlined TfL’s work to improve the safety of fleet drivers.
He used the latest national and London casualty statistics to highlight the scale of the problem, pointing out that in the year to September 2015 at least 547 people were killed ‘because of driving for work’.
With regard to TfL itself, he said the organisation must employ, and be seen to employ, the safest fleet operators in London.
He also outlined on the award-winning CLOCS (Construction Logistics and Cyclist Safety) programme.
Liz Brooker’s presentation looked at the incidence of cyclist and pedestrian collisions.
Liz also expresses her views on this topic in a current opinion piece on this website in which she asks whether cycling on the pavement a real road risk to pedestrians, or just a hindrance and irritation?
At the end of the piece she concludes: “When it comes to scaling our road safety priorities, there are far bigger concerns for the dwindling number of road safety practitioners in London and further afield.”
