A conference taking place in London on 14 June will highlight innovation and good practice in the design and operation of safer vehicles.

Organised by the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS), ‘Safer Vehicles 2016’ will identify opportunities to promote the development and uptake of safer vehicles through public policy at UK, EC and international level.

It will cover HGVs, buses, cars and motorcycles with an emphasis on reducing vulnerable road user casualties. It is being held in partnership with Highways England, TfL, Thatcham Research, Global NCAP, RoadSafe, ETSC and iSAFER.

Confirmed speakers include David Ward, Global NCAP; Richard Cuerden, TRL; Lilli Matson, TfL; Dr Joanna White, Highways England; Antonio Avenoso, ETSC; Matthew Avery, Thatcham Research; and Tricia Hayes, DfT.

The conference will also feature a new construction vehicle with ‘state-of-the-art’ safety equipment, developed in partnership with TfL.

The Dennis Eagle Elite tipper, developed as part of TfL’s CLOCS and Safer Trucks programmes, has ‘far more direct visibility than standard construction tippers’ as the cab is lower with panoramic windows and narrow pillars.

It is fitted with a camera system and a Cyclear warning system to caution vulnerable road users of left turn manoeuvres by the lorry, and to alert the driver when people are passing on the nearside.

David Davies, Executive Director of PACTS, said: “TfL is a prime example of an authority that is really prioritising the safety of the groups most at risk – pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists – which make up 80% of serious and fatal collisions.

“TfL will share its latest work into progressing standards of vehicle safety across London. Including HGVs, buses, and the wider fleet. TfL is influencing and prescribing vehicle design and in doing so improving road safety for those in the Capital and across the UK.

“Safer vehicles – including HGVs, buses, cars and motorcycles – are increasingly important in the push to reach road safety objectives in the UK, across Europe and globally.”

Safer Vehicles 2016 will be held on 14 June at the QEII Centre in central London. Click here for more information or to book to attend.
