Eight schools in Bexley have been recognised for achieving the ‘gold standard accreditation’ for their 2015 school travel plan.

The eight schools attended a special event held in the Civic Offices on Monday (18 April), in the presence of Bexley’s Mayor, Cllr Sybil Camsey.

Cllr Camsey told the pupils about her journey to school as a young girl and spoke of her ‘passion’ for school travel plans. She also recognised the difficulties families face today in finding alternatives to travelling by car for the school run.

Cllr Camsey said: “We know schools across the borough are currently updating their travel plans for this year. I hope the achievement of these eight schools will inspire others to reach for the higher levels of accreditation.

“The aim of a school travel plan is to increase levels of active and sustainable travel, and in turn make a big difference to the wellbeing and health of children, their families and school staff.”

The minimum requirement for a school to attain gold accreditation includes completing a travel survey, staging 25 different travel initiatives and 15 supporting activities, and holding eight separate consultations.

The eight successful schools are: Bedonwell Infant School, Harris Academy Falconwood, Northumberland Heath Primary School, Oakwood School, Peareswood Primary, St Peter Chanel Catholic Primary, St Stephen’s Catholic Primary and Willow Bank Primary School.
