We are committed to improving road safety and reducing casualties and collisions We have a programme of education, training, publicity, engineering and enforcement which aims to reduce road collisions.

Training and education

adult_individual_1Adult cycle training (including cycle maintenance and cycle rides)
Free cycle training is available for those aged 18 years and over who live, work or study in the London Borough of Merton. All training is provided by Cycle Confident within the framework of the Bikeability training scheme (formerly National Standards) by experienced and accredited instructors.

Be a Brighter Biker (moped and scooter training)
As part of our collision reduction programme we offer novice moped and scooter riders FREE off and on-road training. Our two-part programme comprises: classroom theory session and a free CBT day (compulsory basic training) provided by an approved training organisation.

Bikesafe and Scootersafe (motorcycle and scooter training)
Merton Council, in conjunction with BikeSafe-London, invites existing motorcyclists (moped and scooter riders) with a full licence to participate in a FREE Rider Skills training day that offers ‘on road’ assessment of present skills, and advice to help make your riding safer and more enjoyable.

ctcl-logo_200pxChildren's Traffic Club
Merton Council is very happy to support Transport for London’s Children’s Traffic Club. The club is provided London-wide to all pre-school children in a far reaching move to reduce child casualties on our roads. With Transport for London’s sponsorship the club is free to all three year olds, and is an effective and proven way to deliver road safety education to pre-school children.

Children's cycle training and holiday courses
We offer free cycle training courses for children in Year 5 (off road), and Year 6 onwards (on road) who attend Merton schools, plus public training courses for children aged 10 to 18 years during the Easter and summer holidays. Training is provided by accredited trainers through Cycle Confident.

Drive 4life (driving skills for over-55s)
Merton Council offers a free half day course for drivers aged 55 years and over who feel they would benefit from an assessment of their driving skills. The aim of this course is to: address aspects of their driving which may need some help; discuss ways of driving safely and confidently on road; discuss the hazards and problems older drivers face; and to take part in a driving assessment.

kerbcraftKerbcraft (children's road safety training)
Kerbcraft is a road safety training scheme available to children in Merton's schools. It teaches pedestrian safety skills to five to seven year olds through practical roadside training, rather than in the classroom.

Pre-learner driving skills
Merton Council offers a free 'pre-learner' driving skills course to 17-24 year olds who live, study or work in the borough. There is some flexibility on age if space is available, so please ask us. The aim is to promote positive driving attitude, hazard awareness and safer driving skills.

Street Safe and Road Wise (school travel safety)
There are a number of activities, events and schemes that schools can get involved in to increase the safety of pupils when travelling out and about in the borough. These include: Junior Road Safety Officers, Pedestrian Training and Road Safety Presentations, Cycle Training, TfL Safety and Citizenship Team, The Met Police – Safer Transport Team, Safer Neighbourhood Teams, Safer Schools Partnership and Theatre in Education.

Walking: Walk4Life
Our Walk 4life programme encourages and supports residents to walk more as it is beneficial for health and well being. Our walks are free, suitable for all ages and abilities and suit both beginner and intermediate levels. The walks last for around 50 minutes to an hour and you walk at your own pace for as long as you want, within the safety of a group with trained walk leaders.
