Put road safety on the agenda before the new school year

With the new school year just a few weeks away, the London Road Safety Council (LRSC) is pointing parents and carers towards its jungle-themed resource for educating children about road safety.

‘It’s a Jungle Out There’ comprises five short videos – designed to act as a prompt to begin a conversation about the importance of staying safe on the journey to and from school.

The videos feature different animals, including a lemur, a sloth and an armadillo.

They are particularly aimed at 11-12 year-olds who will be transitioning to a new school in September.

The free-to-access resource also features a poster and a 12-page booklet full of educational activities.

Max Moorcock, the LRSC’s press officer, said: “All parents and carers have their own ‘to do’ list before the new school year arrives – from buying new uniforms to deciding what goes into the packed lunch.

“We’re asking that you add road safety to that list.

“Every young person has the right to be safe when walking, cycling or taking public transport to and from school, but the sad reality is that every year, a significant number of children are killed or seriously injured as a result of a road collision that happens on the school run.

“We want to encourage families across London to have the conversation about what the risks of the road are, helping children to understand how to safely navigate their way.”

In 2016, a Public Health England School Journey Safety Guide cited that road collisions remain one of the main causes of premature death among children and young people aged 0-15 years, with 35% of child pedestrians killed or seriously injured during what is typically classified as the ‘school run’.
