LRSC conference will ‘face the future’ of road safety

The case for the restoration of national casualty reduction targets is one of a number of topics to be discussed at a one-day conference organised by the London Road Safety Council.

The free-to-attend conference takes place at Palestra – the Southwark-based home of TfL – on 2 November.

Other topics to be covered include vision and leadership from TfL, ‘Vision Zero’, 20mph schemes, rider and driver training legislation, partnerships and school safety congestion.

Over the past 12 months the London Road Safety Council (LRSC) has, with support from the Road Safety Trust, conducted in-depth research to discover how London’s boroughs plan to meet the challenge of reducing road casualties against a background of diminished resources.

Meetings have been held with 25 of the Capital’s local authorities and with TfL. LRSC officers met with cabinet members and other councillors with an interest in road safety, as well as heads of highways and senior road safety staff.

The stakeholders discussed areas of focus for the future and their vision as to how the service needs to be shaped for effective future delivery.

A common concern shared by a number of participants was an increase in motorcycle casualties – an issue covered by the LRSC at a mini conference held in July.

The November conference will include a variety of speakers, including a number from London authorities who have examples of good practice to share with delegates.

It is hoped that through this information sharing, the event can contribute to the ease and effectiveness of future working in all authorities.

The conference is intended to be of interest local authority road safety professionals and elected members from London and beyond, as well as other stakeholders.

While the conference is free to attend, places must be booked in advance – to book a place contact the LRSC via email.
