Lewisham to prioritise cleaner transport in bid to improve air quality

Lewisham Council has pledged to introduce more School Streets as part of efforts to improve the borough’s air quality over the next five years.

The plan, which was approved last month, sets out seven key priorities, one of which is to create cleaner transport.

Within this is a commitment to make sure that sustainable methods of transport – such as cycling and walking – are easy to access.

The borough will also introduce more School Streets, Play Streets, EV charging points and bike hangers.

The plan also focuses on improving delivery vehicles and services – and the council says it will take steps to ensure that older, highly polluting vehicles are upgraded to be more environmentally friendly.

This includes the council’s own fleet of vehicles.

Cllr Louise Krupski, cabinet member for environment and climate action, said: “Air pollution has been decreasing in Lewisham and London over the past few years, but there’s still much more that needs to be done to address this public health emergency.

“Our bold new action plan sets out the tough measures that we will take to create a greener, healthier and safer borough for current and future generations.

“These include… making active travel more accessible.”
