Attendees at the LRSC’s centenary conference in January 2017 will be updated with regard to a research project into the effectiveness of 20mph speed limits, being carried out by Atkins on behalf of the Department for Transport (DfT).
The presentation will be delivered by Jane Robinson and Nicola Newman from Atkins, the global design, engineering and project management consultancy.
The conference, ‘Safer cities, safer futures’, will take place at the Guildhall in the City of London on 24 January 2017.
While there is evidence suggesting that 20mph zones are effective in reducing collisions and speeds, there is an evidence gap on the effectiveness of 20mph speed limits. A large number of schemes are currently being implemented with limited understanding of where they work best, the factors contributing to their success, and barriers to delivery.
The three-year DfT/Atkins study will be important in informing future policy development on 20mph speeds and limits, as well as influencing scheme development and delivery, and wider transport policy.
The conference presentation will look at the early findings based on the evidence gathered in the first year of the main evaluation phase.
Jane Robinson is senior managing consultant at Atkins, primarily involved in undertaking policy-related research and evaluation, and providing advice and guidance to national, regional and local government.
She is the project manager for the study which comprises both a process and impact evaluation of 20mph schemes across the country.
Nicola Newman is a transport planner and deputy project manager for the study. She is experienced in public consultation and stakeholder engagement and proficient in accessibility analysis.
The conference agenda is currently under development but will include presentations on cycling, pedestrians, shared space, motorcycling, 20mph schemes, HGVs and ‘driverless cars’.
The conference is primarily intended for road safety and active travel professionals and elected members with an interest in road safety.
The delegate fee is £95 for attendees from the public and third sectors and academia, and £145 for others (both prices plus VAT). The fee includes a drinks and canapés reception which will follow the conference and will feature an address by James Cracknell, LRSC president.
An exhibition will run alongside the conference, with prices starting from £495 plus VAT.
