Mission: Manage distractions in order to get to school safely.
[[START]]

*“Are you ready?”* Amber asks.
You quickly grab your bag, and the banana Amber didn’t want.
Your phone is in your hand. You take a quick glance at it.
*Notification...Notification...Notification*
Amber looks at you expectantly.
**How should you respond?**
[["Yes, let's get going!" ->Yes, let's get going!]]
[[Put your phone in your bag]]
[[Put your phone in your pocket]]
With your phone safely in your hand, you get going.
**WHATSAPP "OMG Josh that’s so funny"**
The temptation to just see who Josh saw on the bus is almost too much! But you would have to go through almost 100 messages on the group chat.
**INSTAGRAM "@dantdm started a live video"**
Try not to become too distracted by your mobile!
**What should you do?**
[[Put your phone on silent]]
[[Ignore your phone, but leave it on loud]]
You put your phone in your bag, nice one!

There's a sense of peace and quiet now you can't hear **PING** and **BUZZ BUZZ** every two seconds.
You remind yourself to just check it once you are somewhere safe, like Mum said.
Andy and Amber are now well ahead of you
*“Come on slow coach!”* shouts Amber.
*“Wait up, I’m coming!”* you shout back,
And for the last time, **you decide to…**
[[Place your phone in your pocket]]
[[Leave it at the bottom of your bag]]
The **PING** and **BUZZ BUZZ** sounds that go off almost every 2 seconds are quite annoying but you’ve left your phone on loud. Just in case it’s an important call right?
You remind yourself to leave your phone until you get to school, like Mum said.
Andy and Amber are now well ahead of you

And for the last time, **you decide to…**

You begin to stroll down Shattleton Lane. There's 44 neat houses on your street. You’ve begun to memorise the colours of each front door as you walk.
Passing number 18, you notice Mrs Shaftoe's freshly planted flower beds.
They're summer magnolias. But before you could point them out, your attention is quickly diverted to Amber who is reaching for her phone.
While remembering what Mum warned you about getting distracted,
**what should you say?**
[["Amber, what are you doing?"]]
[["Get off your phone now, Amber! Mum said no distractions!"]]

Andy looks at you nervously.
*"I'm just texting Kayla to see if she's ready!"* she says defensively.
Kayla lives at number 6, she sometimes joins you on the walk to school. But there's always the same problem, she is always late!
"*Maybe Amber should text her to see if she's going to be late"* says Andy "*I can't be late today! I REALLY have to revise for that spelling test before school starts!"*
Looks like it's your call. **What do you think is best?**
[[Allow Amber to text Kayla, just to make sure she'll be on time]]
[[Don't let Amber text her. It's best not to be distracted. We can still knock for Kayla on the way!]]
Andy winces, he really doesn't like confrontation.

*"You two need to chill!"* Amber whines.
She begins to trail behind as you and Andy keep an eye out for cars coming out of their driveways while she texts Kayla...
[["HEY WATCH IT!"]]
Good decision! Even walking down the pavement presents some situations where you need to be focused and not be looking down at your phone. There are driveways all along this street, not to mention the cycle lane on the pathway.
Amber rolls her eyes. *"Scaredy cat!!"* she whines, but you know it's worth it.
If the text was that important, you could've told Amber to stop at a quiet corner to go on her phone but right now it's not that important.
[[Walk to Kayla's]]
Both you and Andy suddenly turn around.
You see Amber dropping her phone in disbelief as a cyclist swerves past, shouting again* "Look where you're walking!"*
Amber has been so distracted texting, she has accidentally walked into the cycle lane!
She gasps in shock, picks up her phone and hops back onto the path.
[[Wait for Amber]]
Finally, you're at Kayla's house.
Andy goes to knock on the door. Amber pushes him out of the way so she can be the one to knock.
*"Oh hi Mr Perez!"* you all smile. Mr Perez is Kayla's dad, and he owns the best cake shop in town!
*"She's late as usual kids. Sorry!"* he rolls his eyes.
**Now, what?**
[[Wait for Kayla]]
[[Maybe you should carry on without Kayla?]]
Andy looks worried. You can tell he's feeling anxious about being late.
*"Maybe you three should go ahead without her! Best not to be late. But I'll tell her you all said hi"* suggests Mr Perez.
Andy sighs with relief.
You all wave goodbye to Mr Perez.
[[Carry on walking to school]]
But before you decide, Mr Perez interrupts you.
*"Maybe you three should go ahead without her! Best not to be late. But I'll tell her you all said hi"* he suggests.
Andy sighs with relief.
You all wave goodbye to Mr Perez.
[[Carry on walking to school]]
*"That was a close one! Amber, are you ok?"* Andy whimpers in a panic.
Amber rolls her eyes, *"I'm fine. Whatever!"*
Well, you all certainly learnt a lesson there! You thought it would have been safe with you walking ahead and keeping watch but maybe it wasn't a very good idea for Amber to text while walking.
**Everyone needs to be alert and aware when walking on the street, even on pavements!**
[[Walk to Kayla's]]
Turning the corner, the three of you stop and examine the road ahead.
It's a busy junction.
Today, there's police tape surrounding the middle of the road. You spot a driver, a cyclist, two policemen and a damaged car. There must have been a crash! Thankfully, no one has been hurt!
Watching the scene unfold, Amber tugs you forward *"Come on, let's go and have a look!"*
**Now, what?**
[[Get a closer look]]
[[Keep your distance]]
You take a hold of Andy's hand, who's very reluctant to join you and Amber.
You've never seen a car accident before and the thought of it is making Andy feel extremely anxious.
Amber however, feels the opposite.
She starts rooting around in her bag. She's looking for her phone, you know it!
**This isn't a good idea! How do you stop her?**
[[Question Amber]]
[[Stop Amber]]
You hold Andy's hand and keep your distance from the scene.

**This isn't a good idea! How do you stop her?**
[[Question Amber]]
[[Stop Amber]]
*"I'm just going to grab my phone and take a couple photos! This will be great for my media project!"* Amber cries. Even so, you know how wrong it is to be taking photos of something like that. And to make it worse, she's paying NO attention to the main road just behind the junction where she's standing.
*"Please do something to stop her!"* Andy pleads.
**You know it would be wrong for Amber to take photos, but how should you stop her?**
[[Tell Amber to stop nicely]]
[[Grab the phone off Amber so she can't take photos]]

*"Amber, do not take photos. This is a crime scene, you could get in trouble!"*
With all the shouting, you've caught the attention of one of the police officers who strolls over to check on you. Andy shudders nervously.
*"Well, hello kids! What are you three doing hanging around here?"*
Before you speak, Amber interrupts you.
*"I just thought it would be really cool to take a couple photos of the scene, officer! For my media project that is!"*
[[Oh dear, Amber]]
You grab the phone out of Amber's hand.
*"Amber, do not take photos. This is a crime scene, you could get in trouble!"*
With all the shouting, you've caught the attention of one of the police officers who strolls over to check on you. Andy shudders nervously.

Before you speak, Amber interrupts you.
*"I just thought it would be really cool to take a couple photos of the scene, officer! For my media project that is!"*
[[Oh dear, Amber]]
The officer shakes his head.
*"Well although you media project sounds cool, Amber, unfortunately, this is a crime scene. And it is against the law to take photos of someone without their consent beforehand. It's also highly inappropriate. I think it's best if the three of you carry on to school, before you get yourselves in trouble."*
Amber hangs her head in shame, shuffling her feet. You're glad she's learnt her lesson.
[[Apologise and carry on walking]]
Making sure to stay out of the scene of the crime, the three of you carry on walking and turn onto the high street. Stopping in a safe place, where you're not in danger, you reach into your bag to check the time on your phone.
[[8:24am]]
Phew! You still have 20 minutes left before the first bell.
Before you put your phone away, you notice a text message from Mum.
Amber and Andy sit on a nearby bench, in a safe spot away from the road and you join them to read the text.
**Hi darling! You've left your history homework on your bed, I'll drop it off at school before work at 10am! Don't worry!**
You sigh, relieved. That was a close one!
[[Gesture to the other two to carry on walking]]
Amber and Andy are bickering. They're so annoying when they argue all of the time! All you want to do is put your headphones in and blast your music out loud to drown them both out.
**The roads are empty, and you're nearly at school. So it would be fine, right?**
[[Put on your headphones]]
[[Leave your headphones in your bag and try to ignore your siblings]]
You click play.
Your favourite song blasts in your ears, and you can't hear your siblings arguing anymore.
You approach the Castle road, which you need to cross.
Castle road in on a bend and sometimes you can't see the traffic that's coming around the corner.
You look left, look right and look all around. The coast is clear.
[[Step off the path]]
Good decision! Music can distract you from your environment, you might not have heard a car if it came whizzing around a corner!
Being as aware as possible, and not distracted, is the safest way to be.
[[Well done! ->Thank Amber and Andy for the heads up]]
**STOP!!!!**
Over your music, you hear Andy and Amber shouting for you from behind.
[[A BUS!]]
You couldn't hear the bus coming around the corner!
Quick! Make a split second decision!
You have (set: $counter to 20)(css: "color: red; font-size: 150%")[|amount>[$counter]](live: 1s)[(set: $counter to it - 1)(if: $counter is 0)[(go-to: "times up")](replace: ?amount)[$counter]] seconds left!
**Do you...**
[[Quickly step back onto the pavement]]
or
[[Run across the road to the other side - you're a really fast runner!]]
You step back onto the path just in time!
You're truly shaken up. Thinking back you realise how distracting your music was, and how much it made you unaware of your surroundings.
**Looking AND listening work together to keep you safe! One without the other is not enough!**
[[Thank Amber and Andy for the heads up]]
Wait a second! It's way safer to step back onto the pavement and allow the bus to pass. You might be a fast runner but no-one can outrun a vehicle! Running across the road is never the right option!
[[Rethink that one ->Quickly step back onto the pavement]]
**Time's up!**
Oh dear! You ran out of time. Remember, to be as alert as possible in order to stay as safe as possible.
[[Try again ->A BUS!]]
You tuck your headphones and your phone into your bag, and cross the final road to school with your siblings.
You've made it and just in time!
After trying your best to remain alert and not distracted, you and your siblings have safely made it to school.
You spot Kayla and Josh walking towards you, and turn to say goodbye to your siblings.
[[Go into school]]
THE END
Congratulations, you have successfully made it to the end of our Distractions interactive, decision-making game!
You have successfully made the right decisions to ensure you and your siblings avoid getting distracted so that you can all get to school safely!
[[What's next?]]
**Final Mission**
**Design us a road safety poster!**
Your task is to design a poster that informs your school friends about the dangers of using your phone on the roads and the importance of road safety. Think about all the potential distractions that can occur with your phone and what you have learnt from this story. You could include advice, for example “What to do if you have to make a phone call?” or “Where is the best place to take a selfie?"!
