Ride to Work Week returns in June

Ride to Work week

Riders and employers are being encouraged to join the motorcycle industry in promoting the benefits of commuting on two wheels, as part of an annual week-long initiative.

Organised by the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA), Ride to Work Week 2018 takes place between 18-24 June, with 18 June named as Ride to Work Day.

Using the tagline #commutehappy, Ride to Work Week aims to encourage a shift towards powered two wheel (PTW) commuting. The campaign highlights the benefits of riding a PTW to work which include saving time and money, easier parking and improving road skills.

The organisers point to a one-off report, produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which examined the impact of commuting patterns on people’s levels of anxiety, happiness and satisfaction.

The ONS report found that people whose journey to work involved walking, cycling, driving a car or taking the bus experienced an adverse increase in some or all of the factors measured after just 15 minutes.

In contrast, there was no adverse effect on levels of happiness or anxiety for those who rode a motorcycle, moped or scooter to work – even for journeys of up to 30 minutes.

The Ride to Work Week website includes a host of downloadable resources which are available free of charge – including logos, posters, flyers and infographics identifying the main reasons why people ride to work.
