Barnet online resource for primary school children

The Safe and Sustainable Travel team at Barnet Council have collaborated with Pelican Radio Collective - a group of second year students from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama - to create a road safety resource for primary school children.

The students are a part of the BA (Hons) Contemporary Performance Practices – specialising in BA (Hons) Drama, Applied Theatre & Education and BA (Hons) Writing for Performance, on the Collaborative Outreach unit that students from both degrees take part in. This is the third year that Barnet have collaborated with students who have historically delivered road safety workshops in schools. Due to Covid-19, this year students have adapted by creating an online interactive resource.

The resource is suitable for Year 5 and Year 6 children with the aim of supporting them to be safe and independent travellers. This unique resource consists of 4 episodes, each one focusing on the following themes: Episode 1: Safer Crossings, episode 2: Distractions, episode 3: Be Bright, Be Seen, episode 4: Car passenger safety.

The episodes are a set of narratives based on a family in which the participant is a member of. Each episode begins with a drama audio clip (transcripts available) followed by a written narrative in which the children are required to navigate their way through, making decisions to aid their safe journeys to the shops, school, a party and the cinema.

Barnet are happy to share this resource with other boroughs and welcome all feedback. Please forward any queries or comments to Sharada Osman at road.safety@barnet.gov.uk.
