The new fleet of Santander Cycles have been hired more than 25,000 times since they rolled onto the Capital’s streets at the start of November – 30% higher than the average hire rate.
Unveiled by TfL on 30 October, the new generation of Santander Cycles provide riders with increased handling, safety and comfort.
More than 250 of the new bikes are already in circulation, with thousands more set to follow over the next few years.
David Eddington, TfL’s head of cycle hire, says he has no doubts the new bikes will ‘encourage even more people to take to two wheels’.
They new Santander Cycles feature tyres with puncture prevention and improved front and rear ‘Blaze’ lighting.
Designed to make riders more visible and increase their confidence on the roads, the new lighting comprises a brighter brake light and a ‘greatly enhanced’ Blaze Laserlight, with 180° visibility, on the front of the bike.
Other features on the new cycles include a gel saddle, lower frame, new gear hub and Bluetooth.
David Eddington said:
“The new Santander Cycles have been exceptionally popular, with thousands of people trying the new bikes in the first few weeks.
“We have no doubt that these upgraded cycles are going to help us break more records and will encourage even more people to take to two wheels.”
2016 was a record-breaking year for Santander Cycles with 10.3m hires – up 4.4% on 2015. In the nine months up to and including September 2017, there were more than 8.7m hires, with five of the nine months setting year-on-year records for the number of journeys made.
Santander Cycles will also extend into Brixton during the first few months of 2018, with seven new docking stations providing space for up to 200 bikes to be installed across the borough this winter.
