Road safety officers from across the Capital recently convened to share best practice and discuss the different elements of School Streets schemes.
School Streets – which typically involve closing roads around the school gates to motor traffic at peak times – have become increasingly popular over recent years.
The aim of the schemes are to improve air quality and make it easier for children to walk and cycle to school.
Earlier this month, road safety officers met to discuss School Streets, at an event organised by the London Road Safety Council (LRSC).
Different aspects of the schemes – including legislation and road safety – were outlined by Carla Leowe, road safety officer at City of Westminster.
Westminster launched its first School Street in April 2019, outside St Mary’s Bryanston Square school in Marylebone. The borough has plans in place to implement at least one scheme in each ward moving forward.
Attendees also heard from Debbie Huckle, team leader for safety and travel planning at Brent Council.
In July 2019, Brent launched an 18-month School Streets pilot outside Harlesden Primary School and Wykeham Primary School.
Debbie explained key elements of the schemes, such as CCTV enforcement, the consultation process, engagement events and resident permits.
Planning is now underway for the LRSC to host a follow-up event later this year.
