The agenda for the London Road Safety Council’s centenary conference is taking shape with two further presentations added to the schedule.
Mahmood Siddiqi will explain how a shared space scheme on a busy street in West London has eased tension between pedestrians and motorists, while Liz Brooker and Tanya Fosdick will analyse the types of motorcyclists involved in collisions.
The one-day conference, ‘Safer Cities, Safer Futures’, will be held at the Guildhall in the City of London on 24 January 2017. Sponsored by RedSpeed International, it will explore the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead for road safety professionals working in cities across the UK.
Mahmood Siddiqi is the director for transport and highways at both the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.
He has been instrumental in developing bi-borough working to bring significant savings to both councils through sharing resources, joint procurement and comparing methods.
His career spans three decades and has included work on some of the capital’s most iconic public realm schemes including Oxford Street and Kensington High Street.
His presentation will focus on Exhibition Road in South Kensington, which attracts 11 million visitors annually but, until 2011, was a car-dominated environment where most of the available space was designated for moving traffic and parking.
Following the street’s refurbishment there is now significantly more space for pedestrians, which was achieved not through pedestrianisation but, controversially, by introducing ambiguity.
This presentation reflects on the scheme five years on and asks whether it has opened the floodgates to more innovative public realm projects.
Liz Brooker MBE and Tanya Fosdick will deliver a joint presentation looking at the risks faced by motorcyclists in London.
The presentation will be based on analysis carried out in a number of London boroughs to understand the types of motorcyclists who are involved in collisions on their roads. The presentation will provide practical insights into who these riders are and how they can be engaged with – and explain how the findings have been used on the ground in Lewisham and Newham to try to address their specific issues.
Liz Brooker, Lewisham Council’s road safety and sustainable transport manager, has been involved in road safety in the borough for more than three decades.
Tanya Fosdick, from Road Safety Analysis, is an experienced researcher who has worked in road safety for more than 10 years and has been involved in a number of national research projects.
LRSC centenary conference
‘Safer Cities, Safer Futures’ is a celebration of the London Road Safety Council’s centenary. The event is primarily intended for road safety and active travel professionals, the emergency services and elected members with an interest in road safety.
The delegate fee is £95 for attendees from the public and third sectors and academia, and £145 for others (both prices plus VAT). The fee includes a drinks and canapé reception which will follow the conference and will feature an address by James Cracknell OBE, LRSC president.
An exhibition will run alongside the conference, with prices starting from £495 plus VAT.
