LRSC training session praised by SCPs

LRSC SCP training session

A training session provided by the London Road Safety Council for more than 50 school crossing patrols (SCPs) has met with universal acclaim from attendees.

The training session on 15 April was delivered by LRSC’s James Parker and Liz Knight to SCPs working in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The session covered important aspects of the SCP role including the correct drill, uniform standards, safeguarding, body language and report writing.

The feedback from attendees was provided by Ann Grant, School Crossing Patrol Co-ordinator at Greenwich Council, who said: “Not one negative comment received. I think your approach and style fitted the group perfectly.”

One attendee described the session as “interesting and informative” while another went further, describing it as the “best training session yet”.

Another found the advice “very helpful for when I get an abusive parent…stay calm and smile…”

James Parker said: “It was a real pleasure to see the value that Greenwich Council place in its team of patrollers, whose service ranged from four months to 41 years.

“We talked about some of the problems they encounter on a daily basis, including poor behaviour by other road users, and they agreed that even these experiences had the positive benefit of being teaching points for the children they see across the road.”

The SCP training has now been delivered to SCPs in Sutton, Kingston and Lambeth and a further session is planned for Hounslow on 1 June.
