Pupils attending an infants school in Barking and Dagenham have seen their school crossing patrols reinstated, thanks to support from the London Road Safety Council.
A number of years ago, Barking and Dagenham Council disbanded their SCP service – affecting schools including the Furze Infants School.
Having spent two years trying to get their two SCPs reinstated, the school contacted the London Road Safety Council for help.
Chris King, vice president of the London Road Safety Council, explained to the school that they could manage the SCPs themselves, providing Barking and Dagenham Council authorised the sites.
Once that had been agreed, Chris visited the school, delivering training to six members of staff.
The initiative was picked up by BBC London, who visited with a film crew on 27 January.
James Parker, executive officer of the London Road Safety Council, said: “In recent years, we have provided refresher training for existing school crossing patrol officers and has also assisted councils who haven’t the expertise in house to train new staff.
“Some years ago, Barking and Dagenham Council disbanded the service and this particular school had gained permission from the council to recruit and manage their own staff for their own site.
“However, as the council longer employ a manager, they were unable to offer any guidance and expertise in the training for the new recruits and that is where the London Road Safety Council stepped in.”
