Two companies running car share initiatives in the Capital have announced that they are expanding their operations.
According to TransportXtra, DriveNow – a one-way car club already operating in Islington, Hackney, Haringey and Waltham Forest – will soon also be available in Brent, Barnet, Tower Hamlets and Westminster.
DriveNow began operating in London in December 2014 and has a fleet of 310 vehicles available for hire. The initiative allows users to rent a car from one location and park it in any public on-street parking bay within the DriveNow zone.
In February, Barnet Council announced it was consulting on plans to introduce floating car club schemes, as part of wider efforts to improve access to transport across the borough.
Another car share company, Zipcar has also announced it is expanding its London fleet – with the introduction of more than 300 electric vehicles.
The first 100 Volkswagen e-Golfs will be available from the summer, increasing to 325 by the end of 2018. The move will mean that London is home to the largest number of publicly available shared electric cars in the country.
Jonathan Hampson, general manager for Zipcar UK, said:
“With over 200,000 Zipcar members now in London, we are already seeing Londoners embracing car sharing rather than car owning in growing numbers.
“If we are to achieve healthier, cleaner streets, as set out in the mayor of London’s latest transport strategy, this change away from car ownership and towards car access is essential.”
Zipcar will publish more details about how the scheme will work and what it will cost in July 2018 when the first e-Golfs are introduced.
