Family-friendly rides promote cycling in Westminster

Westminster cycling2

Westminster Council is making use of the borough’s landmarks to provide a series of family-friendly, free-to-attend cycle rides led by experienced instructors.

First conceived in 2012, Westminster’s led rides have been developed in conjunction with experienced cycle instructors from Cycle Confident to allow everyone to enjoy and explore London by bicycle.

Designed to encourage more people to take up cycling, the routes take in some of London’s quirkiest landmarks and most iconic sights.

They have been developed using London’s famous Blue Plaques which link the people of the past with the buildings of the present, and Westminster’s similar Green Plaques scheme which was started in 1991 to ‘draw attention to particular buildings in Westminster associated with people of renown’.

The routes cater to a variety of different tastes, allowing everyone from avid Beatles’ fans to art historians and wildlife enthusiasts to indulge their passions from the saddle.

The 10 routes comprise:

  • Beatles by Bike
  • A Musical History
  • Westminster Wildlife
  • Sculpture and Street Art
  • Discoveries and Inventions
  • The Evening Christmas Lights
  • The Chocolate Tasting Ride
  • Westminster Firsts
  • Antiques Shops and Auction Houses
  • Nairn’s Westminster

The rides are professionally marshalled and use quiet roads, as well as some of the segregated cycle tracks recently installed in Westminster.

Residents and visitors can book a place on a supervised ride, or download the routes and information to ride them alone.

Upcoming led rides include Beatles by Bike on 25 November and Westminster’s Christmas lights and decorations on 10 and 12 December.
