Event will celebrate cycling in Westminster

Westminster cycling festival

A mini-velodrome is among the main attractions of a one-day event taking place on Sunday (17 June) to celebrate cycling in Westminster.

Organised by Westminster City Council, the Westminster Cycling Festival takes place at Marble Arch between 10.30am and 5pm.

The event coincides with end of Bike Week 2018 (12-17 June) – organised to highlight the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling.

As well as a mini-velodrome, the festival features a display of bicycle accessories including helmets, tools, bells, panniers and baskets.

Active Westminster will be promoting the health benefits of cycling using a couple of static gym bikes, while the council’s road safety team will be on hand to provide information on training for adults and children and its themed led rides.

The rides, which are family-friendly and free-to-attend, are led by experienced instructors and take in many of Westminster’s landmarks.

The council will also be highlighting the ‘Quietways’ network – recommended routes that cyclists can take to avoid high volumes of traffic.

The Metropolitan Police will be holding an ‘Exchanging Places’ event, where cyclists are invited to sit in a lorry cab and appreciate the complexities of the driver’s task negotiating London traffic – and giving cyclists a ‘driver’s eye’ view of blind spots.

There are also a number of activities for children including making jewellery and keyrings from bike bits, creating Victorian moving images toys (thaumatropes) and decorating bicycle shaped biscuits.
