Brent Council is encouraging residents to swap cars for spacehoppers and turn their streets into playgrounds in support of Car Free Day 2019.
Car Free Day is an annual event, celebrated across the globe, which promotes walking, cycling and public transport.
This year’s Car Free Day takes place on 22 September – and Brent Council is waiving he £200 road closure fee for anyone wanting to host a play street.
Cllr Krupa Sheth, Lead Member for Environment at Brent Council, said: “We’re proud to support World Car Free Day for the second year running. This year will be bigger and better, and we want the whole community to get involved.
“Car Free Day is just one day but we can all make a difference throughout the year by walking or cycling instead of hopping in the car. These small steps will help us to create a cleaner, greener Brent.”
Ahead of the event, Brent is one of 16 London boroughs to have signed a new ‘Play Street Pledge’. Devised by the charity London Play, the pledge commits to help children play out in the streets where they live – bringing communities together while tackling air pollution.
Any Brent resident who would like to host a play street on 22 September can apply to close their road for the day without charge, by 30 June.
