We facilitate, deliver and commission road safety education, training and publicity initiatives through pre-schools, schools, colleges and community groups, businesses and associated organisations across the City of Westminster including the following:

secondaryschool_924School Travel Plan Programme
There is a statutory duty under the Education and Inspections Act 2006 to promote sustainable travel to and from school, and between schools and other institutions.

We continually assist education establishments to produce and maintain approved School Travel Plans and promote and encourage sustainable travel and transport for children and young people from the ages of 5-18 year olds.

Schools are encouraged to produce a travel plan which addresses:

  • The promotion of safe walking and cycling
  • Lower reliance on car journeys
  • Child obesity
  • Traffic congestion near and around the school
  • Air quality levels and the health of the school community

There is further information published in the Sustainable Modes of Travel Strategy 2015 via the Westminster website.

Westminster walkWestminster Wiser Walking
This child pedestrian training scheme is offered to Year 2 through to Year 6 at all Westminster Primary Schools and takes place throughout the academic year during term time.

The children learn, with the help of road safety officers and volunteers, road safety skills to use when appropriate to their age.  The training is intended to give them the skills for independent travel in the future and is based on the Department for Transport Kerbcraft model.

The scheme has predominantly been taken up by schools that have a travel plan, but is available to all education establishments within Westminster.
