Fast food delivery rider safety campaign
We recently organised a road safety campaign targeting scooter/motorcycle fast food delivery riders, after commissioning a casualty report which highlighted the high number of collisions involving riders with an engine of less than 125cc.

Statistics from Newham Motorcycle Study have shown that there is a peak in motorcyclists involved in collisions between 6pm and 10pm, particularly on Friday to Sunday.

Under the Health and Safety Act 1974, companies have a duty of care to protect their employees. This includes road activities with companies required to carry out an assessment of the risks to the health and safety of its employees.

MC Waistcoat photoTo help address this problem, Newham Council has offered businesses high visibly waistcoats to use in conjunction with their riders existing Personal Protective Equipment so they are more visible to other road users.

We are also offering a FREE Workshop for riders which will help them improve their road craft skills and become safer and more confident.

For more information visit BikeSafe London. Alternatively, if you would more info on the high visibly waistcoats or further advice please email or telephone 020 3373 1298.

20mph speed limits

Some areas of Newham's roads have been restricted to a maximum speed of 20mph rather than 30mph, in order to reduce the number of road casualties.

Where are 20mph limits used?
In residential areas where road traffic crashes have happened as a result of excessive speed and in locations identified as 'cluster sites'.

Why are other traffic-calming measures used in the zones?
It would be easy just to install a number of 20mph signs at the entrances to the zones, but this would not significantly reduce vehicle speed. In our view, such zones have to be self-enforcing and to do this we also need to use additional traffic calming measures.

How do I know if I am in a 20mph zone?
You will see a sign at each entrance point and when you leave the zone. There are no repeater signs within the zone.

Cycle training
We offer free cycle sessions for everyone - whether you want to learn to ride a bike or just improve your skills on the road.

All our cycle skills sessions are free of charge and follow the three levels of the national standard, known as Bikeability. We give cycle training to children at their schools, and for adults and families we run training sessions for complete beginners and more experienced cyclists every Saturday.

We book adult and family cycle sessions on a first-come-first-served basis. You can join a group or one-to-one session, or book a session for your family to learn together.

Click here for more information, or if you would like a free cycle skills session please email us.

School travel plans
School travel plans outline practical measures that can make the school journey safer, children healthier and improve the school environment. They aim to:

  • Make the school journey safer
  • Reduce car journeys
  • Offer sustainable transport choices
  • Reduce school gate congestion
  • Improve health and fitness among children
  • Increase road awareness
  • Build/strengthen links with the community
  • Encourage environmental stewardships
  • Provide a local context for classroom work
  • Tackle lateness and pupil alertness

Walking to local services, using public transport for school trips, cycle training, the Junior Travel Ambassador Scheme, and school crossing patrols are examples of these practical measures. Schools with a travel plan can achieve Transport for London STARS Accreditation.
